The Question:

When working out abdominals, I've heard some conflicting information, and I'm not sure which to believe. I've heard that you have to suck-in while working abs or they will get get stronger, but in a curved (not flat) shape. Sounds crazy to me, but not something I'd want to risk not doing if it's true.

I've also heard that working abs, even if you have a layer of fat, can help flatten your stomach because it tightens the muscles and pulls you abdominal wall closer to your body. Is this true?

Thanks for your help, and great job on the site!

The Answer:

Your abdominal questions do have some important points. You don't have to suck in your abs when you are working them in order to avoid a "curved" abdominal area but it will make the exercises a little harder and ultimately this will give you a flatter, “posturally” better, abdominal wall. Don't forget to diet to really get those abs showing!
