The Question:I have a pacemaker. It is located just below my clavicle, internally. What exercises could be done without stressing the wires? When surgery was preformed my pec (left) was partially cut and made into a pocket, as to not allow the device to float in my chest. The wire connection is directly under my skin and any movement raising my arm creates the wires to move closer to the clavicle. I am concerned about using heavy weights and getting my wires disconnected as a result of too much force.
What would you recommend to train my pec. region without harm to my situation? The Answer:Exercises for the pectoralis muscle group involve either a pressing movement or a "fly" movement. Both of these exercises involve raising the arm to a perpendicular position with the torso. Since you say that any movement that involves raising your arm creates the wires of your pacemaker to move closer to the clavicle and which may possibly disconnect these wires it may be almost impossible to train your pecs. You will have to determine if you can lift your arms enough to perform one of the pressing or flying movements.
Now, you also mentioned your concern about using heavy weights and a possible disconnection of the wires as well. I can say that you don't necessarily have to train with heavier weights to develop your pecs. If you are not going to compete in any bench press competitions in the near future don’t worry about how much weight you are using. Concentrate on perfect technique and try moving a little slower than the recommended speed that I have for each workout. I usually recommend a 2-0-2-0 tempo which is two seconds down, no pause, two seconds up, no pause, and repeat. You could try a 4-1-4-1 tempo. This slower tempo will stimulate your muscles without having to increase the weight as much.
I hope you have enough movement capabilities to perform one of the chest exercises. Then, just keep the weight light, do a few more repetitions and slow down your tempo of movement a little and you will do great. Try out one of the Get Lean Programs for a lighter weight higher repetition workout! |
