The Question:

I recently purchased a head harness for the Neck flex/ext exercises. I was doing a poor adaption previously. I understnd how to position my self and the harness for neck extension. I have trouble with neck flexion (I lie on my bench in prone with the weight hanging off the side of the bench) and completely have no idea how to set up for lateral flexion. Any toughts would be helpful.

The Answer:

The neck harness is built best for doing neck extension exercises. The lateral flexion left and right moves with a neck harness are hard to do. The strap rubs across your eyes and nose! Just lay on your side on the bench and let the harness hang down off the bench as in the neck flexion movement and give it hell! As I mentioned before, the strap is pretty brutal.

Try this once. Get a medicine ball or even a cheap kid's beachball. Place the ball on the side of your head and stand with your side facing a wall. Place your feet about 3 feet from the wall. Gently lean over until the ball is on the wall. Release your hands. Now, you should be holding your body up with your head and neck as you are leaning against the wall. You may have to stand a little closer depending on your neck strength. You can then perform lateral flexion left or right for the required number of repetitions. You can even do this facing the wall for neck flexion and facing away from the wall for neck extension. Let me know how this goes.
