The Question:

I am 15 years old and I would like to know that if lifting about 100% of my own weight in any of the exercices( bench press, leg press, calf raise Etc)will cause me not to grow further in height. I am recently 5.8ft and want to reach at least 6ft maximum.

The Answer:

Height is something that is determined by your own genetic predisposition, or heredity along with other factors such as nutrition, adequate sleep, and activity level. It has been shown that children involved in extremely high levels of activity combined with reduced caloric consumption (chronic starvation) can negatively affect their growth.

There is unsubstantiated concerns that heavy lifting in young people before they are finished growing could stunt growth. This has never been confirmed by any research. There is definitely no set amount of weight that would cause such an effect. As long as you are performing weightlifting exercises with weights that you can use correct form with, whether it is 50% or 100%, along with adequate nutrition there is no reason you should worry about not reaching the full height of your genetic potential.

The National Strength and Conditioning Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado has issued a position statement on adolescent strength training. I'm sorry that I don't have their number on hand but if you call them they will send you a copy. This should clear up any fears you may have.
